Interview: Joesph M. Rinaldo

What have you had published?
I have four books published that are available on Amazon. In Valerie's Retreat the forty-one-year-old protagonist meets a wonderful man sixteen years her junior. Even though they seem to have nothing in common since she is a Head Teller at a bank and he's studying for a doctorate in Archaeology, the pair clicks. A Spy Home is a memoir of a former spy who near the end of his career comes to the realization that his life's work of promoting rebellion in third-world counties for American interests was a waste. Out of bitterness, he steals over nine million dollars on his last mission. The money was meant for a pro-American rebel group in an impoverished country. His retirement is spent learning what he missed at home with his family and wondering if the CIA will figure out he has their money. Hazardous Choices describes the difficulty a young man has trying to fit in during his first year of college. In Chicago he served as a gangbanger for the vicious Neptune Knights, and in a small Kentucky town where he received a scholarship to play division two football he tries to fit in with the other students. His understanding of the world doesn't make much sense in this environment. A Mormon Massacre tells about a young man in his early twenties who had been raised hating the Mormon church. To fight what he believes is a cult, Jeremiah goes undercover as a convert to rescue women from abusive plural marriages.
What genre(s) of book do you write?
As you can see from the above description, I don't have a favourite genre. The stories that pop into my head get written down. They haven't fit nicely into a genre, which I think makes them more interesting. I just read 11/22/63 by Stephen King. The book was great, but I have no idea what if any genre it fits into.
What inspired you to write your first book?
The actual impetus for me to begin writing came while I was reading Three Weeks With My Brother by Nicholas Sparks. When I got to the part where he received a million-dollar advance, I thought, “Holy cow! He’s a good writer, but I know I can do this, too.” I’ve been writing since that day in 2004.
How long did it take you to write “Valerie’s Retreat”?
That's harder to answer than one might think. I wrote the book in a few months, since I was working part-time. However, I reread/edited it twice, my wife edited it once, and we had a professional editor. Start to finish, all of that takes somewhere in the nine month range.
What is the working title of your next book(s)?
Life After Life; right now I love that title but it might change.
Do you self-publish your books or go through an agency?
We self-publish. We being my wife and I. We have a great professional relationship. When one is working, the other leaves the room.
What part of writing books do you find the hardest?
I especially hate, after I've typed it, going back and doing that first edit. That seems to take forever because that's when I find the most mistakes.
What do you do in your spare time?
We like to go boating as a family, and I jog to stay fit.
Who is your favourite author?
I really liked Gillian Flynn's Sharp Objects, but I'm not sure she should be a favourite after only one book. Writing a series sounds very boring, but I loved the Hunger Games series.
What’s your favourite genre to read?
I don't choose what to read by how it's formatted. Sharp Objects might officially be a thriller? Suspense? I don't know. Maybe I'm a weirdo, but I've never cared about genre.
Do you have any advice for other writers?
You really need to find someone who will tell you if your work stinks. Most people won't. In fact, it's very hard to find someone honest enough to do that.
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
I understand people are hesitant to give independent authors a chance. Some of the indie stuff IS really bad. If any of the books I've mentioned interest you, please go to the free "Click to Look Inside" and sample the first chapter. If a book grabs you that quick, you'll probably be glad you got it. Also, if you are in a book club that reads one of my books I'd be honoured to join your discussion. Feel free to contact me through Facebook or my website, www.josephmrinaldo.com.

Interview: Haidji

What have you had published?
Life into Mist
SG- Suicide Game
What genre(s) of book do you write?
Fiction
What inspired you to write your first book?
I started to write stories as I was 12 years old,
In hand written and hand painted books.
My books are in private collections and museums,
In limited and very expensive editions.
In 2013 I decided to publish worldwide, old and new stories, step by step.
In 2014 I will publish a tale I wrote many years ago, one of my first stories and another story, book that is in a Museum in Europe.
Everything inspires me to write.
How long did it take you to write “SG-Suicide Game”?
I took years to write SG- Suicide Game
I don’t know how many anymore. The book make persons cry and laugh.
It is very intense, writing this book was overwhelming.
What is the working title of your next book(s)?
For now the name is “Antipoda” or “Antipodes”
The book will be finished in about 2 years, more and less.
When and why did you begin writing?
As I was 12 years old I wrote my first hand painted and hand written book.
A small fairy tale.
I also wrote before, small stories and poems.
Why do I write?
Because to write is like to breath, I see (feel) the story like a movie and write it down, it is like to inspire and expire the world around and inside of me, around and inside other persons, situations and beings.
Do you self publish your books or go through an agency?
I self publish my books. A Publisher contacted me from New York after “Life into Mist”  but I decided to stay with myself.
What part of writing books do you find the hardest?
It is hard when I want to write and don’t have a pen, pencil or my computer next and need to ask one for someone next to me. I write then over napkins, newspapers or what I can find around me.
I write almost all the time. The hardest part of writing books and when you need to write something and don’t have a pen next to you.
What do you do in your spare time?
I don’t have spare time J …but I ride a bike 20-30km a day and I love to ski.
Who is your favourite author?
Shakespeare
What’s your favourite genre to read?
Fiction.
Do you have any advice for other writers?
Just write and write and write.
Read all you wrote as would you be someone else,
Think about it.
And write it all again.
The first time you write something, don’t think about it, just write it down.
Accept good critics, they help you to grow.
Is there anything else you’d like to add?

Thank you for the interview, I hope you all enjoy reading my books.

Interview:

What have you had published?
Currently 1000 Sleepless Nights is the only book out there but I have two others that will be released in November
What genre(s) of book do you write?
I primarily write contemporary romance but I have one paranormal coming out
What inspired you to write your first book?
A vacation I took. I was at Monument Valley, the Navajo Nation, and one of the Navajo workers inspired me, along with a great interest in their culture. That isn’t the first book released but was the first I wrote.
How long did it take you to write “1000 Sleepless Nights”?
Not very long. It was one of the easier to get out. I average about 3 months for a rough draft then fiddle with it for awhile until I think it works.
What is the working title of your next book(s)?
The book I am working on currently is titles Serentiy
When and why did you begin writing?
I have always had stories in my head and liked to write but I had a teacher, actually a few, that would rip apart my writing in school. I tend to think random and kind of wrote that way. I sat down and really took it serious when my kids hit high school. I finally had time.
Do you self publish your books or go through an agency?
I am published through Entranced Publishing
What part of writing books do you find the hardest?
The endings.
What do you do in your spare time?
I love the outdoors. I am usually out biking or kayaking.
Who is your favourite author?
I don’t have one. Depends on the genre and then I can nit pick areas of writing I like for a variety of authors. There are so many good ones out there.
What’s your favourite genre to read?
Contemporary Romance as of now but I was really into the paranormal and Hunger games type books for awhile.
Do you have any advice for other writers?
Write for yourself not for fame or fortune
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
The Indie Authors are a wonderful group of people and if you are a writer or a reader get online and follow them. They are a blast and we love all the support our readers pour out.

Excerpt:

Raven stood in the shadows of the room, watching Sawyer.
Tahk had settled in next to her and from the sound of his snores, he fell into deep sleep within seconds. When he saw her un-strap her flak jacket and peel it from her sweaty body, he knew he had to go talk to her.
“Geesh, I stink,” she muttered.
“We all do.” Raven hovered over her and then squatted. “I wish you’d keep it on.”
“It hurts.” She pointed to the wounds from the attack.
Raven reached out, lifted her chin with a finger, and trailed it down her throat.
Raven felt her breathing get ragged at his touch. He wanted to cup her face in his hand and kiss her. Tahk would go ballistic if he knew what Raven was thinking.
“Marines don’t whine.” He dropped his hand, afraid of what he might do if he didn’t break the connection.
“I’m not a Marine, and I’m not whining.” Sawyer looked disappointed when his hand dropped.
“You’re a Marine when you’re with us. Stop trying to convince everyone you’re so tough.”
“I don’t—“ Sawyer stopped mid-sentence when Raven raised an eyebrow. “Okay so maybe I do.”
“It’s okay to be soft. No one expects you to be tough.”
“I don’t want anyone to worry about me. They need to focus on staying alive, not keeping me alive.” Her eyes were so big against her dirt stained face. But it was her mouth that had him entranced. Even with the bloody cut at the corner, he couldn’t keep his mind off wondering how her mouth would taste.
“I’m sorry.” His words caught in his throat, barely making a sound as they came out.
“Sir. Wasn’t your fault. I should have stayed closer to Tahk.”
Her use of Sir made him cringe. Hadn’t she listened when he told her he cared about her? Of course, he had followed it with, "I shouldn’t," but still, couldn’t she see he was dying here?
“Probably would have happened sooner or later.” Raven stopped and then corrected himself, “I mean everyone gets surprised sometimes.” He closed his eyes and willed himself not to be a complete asshole. Sawyer set her mouth in a firm line and didn’t answer. Too late, she already thought he was a dick. Raven rubbed a hand over his chin. “How are you feeling?”
She didn’t answer at first, and Raven thought for sure he’d screwed up this conversation. Finally she said, “Sore.”
Raven held his hand out. A small peppermint candy sat in his palm. A peace offering.
“Thanks.” Sawyer took the candy. “Do you and Tahk steal all the candy from the care packages?”
“What? No.” Raven rubbed his chin again, wondering how giving her a peppermint made him a candy stealer.
Sawyer let out a sound that sounded like a laugh. He looked up to see a smile on her face. “I was joking. Tahk always has candy in his pockets.”
Raven nodded, and then said, “Tahk felt it was best I stay away from you.”
“Shouldn’t be hard. You don’t particularly like me,” Sawyer said loudly, her smile disappearing instantly.
Raven raised his hand, placing a finger to his lips...quieting her. “What?” The light from the window cast shadows on the walls, illuminating half of Sawyer’s face. “Why do you think I don’t like you?” He feared he sounded more like a confused teenager than a commanding officer. But he’d told her he cared, and now she thought he didn’t like her. He needed to man up and spill his guts. It was killing him not to grab her and press his mouth to hers.
“You’re mean to me.” She popped the candy in her mouth.
“I.” He closed his eyes, taking a deep breath. “I’m sorry I gave you the impression I didn’t like you.”
“It’s okay.” She shrugged. “You aren’t supposed to be my friend.”
“Yeah, I wasn’t looking to be your friend.” He met her gaze and held it, hoping she would see the feelings he was trying so hard to suppress.
Sawyer dropped her gaze first.
Raven let out a sigh and then touched her cheek. “I like you, Sawyer. I really do.”
Her mouth opened slightly, and he heard her breath catch again. She looked confused, but before he could say anything more Tahk started to wake up.
“Get some rest.” He got up and moved back into the shadows across the room. He could feel Tahk’s eyes boring a hole in his back.

About the Author:
Hi, my name is Siren Allen. I’m a writer and lover of all things erotic and romantic. I reside in southern Mississippi where I write steamy romances that are guaranteed to make you blush. When I’m not listening to the characters in my head and jotting down their adventures, I am busy working as a Clinical Laboratory Technician. My hobbies are reading, writing and shopping, though I hate trying on clothing. If I wasn’t a writer or a Laboratory Professional, I would probably be a Secret Agent.
